Manufacturer of Daytrana Skin Patch Found Lacking

. By
Miami, FLA “Form 483” is a document issued under the auspices of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over suspected lapses in quality control. In this case, the FDA wrote up Noven Pharmaceuticals for lapses in batch reviews and testing, stability and process controls, and complaints handling. Pundits are left wondering if such lapses have anything to do with Daytrana skin color loss.

The Form 483 issued to Noven by the FDA carried 13 counts.

Noven is the manufacturer of the Daytrana transdermal patch, a product often prescribed to individuals - including children - with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The Daytrana patch is designed to feed medication in a controlled fashion to the patient through the skin. However, there have been reports of Daytrana skin color loss and other Daytrana side effects associated with the product. While rare, the loss of pigmentation can be permanent. Both the manufacturer and the FDA recommend rotating application sites to avoid impacting the same area of skin and risking skin color loss.

The FDA has warned that such Daytrana skin color loss can be permanent.

According to various reports, the Noven manufacturing facility located in Miami, Florida, was subject to a series of inspections from June 22 through July 10 of this year. Inspectors found various deficiencies. To wit, the accuracy, sensitivity, specificity and reproducibility of test methods were not established and documented. The Form 483 notes that cold flow testing and testing of adhesive transfer were lacking for Noven’s Minivelle, and Daytrana transdermal patches.

When a batch failure has been detected, a manufacturer is required to file an NDA field alert within three working days following notification or discovery that a batch has experienced any kind of failure. The FDA noted that Noven had dropped the ball on this requirement. Written procedures normally produced to ensure that products possess the required identity, strength, quality and purity were lacking.

Any written procedures that did exist were found to lack any requirement for calibration of instruments and apparatus employed in the manufacture of products, at suitable intervals.

As for complaints handling, Noven took heat on that front as well. Since 2006, when the Daytrana transdermal skin patch was launched, Noven has received 41 complaints of Daytrana skin color loss. While requesting a label update, the FDA notes in its Form 483 that Noven failed to undertake any kind of investigation into possible causes of skin pigmentation loss.

Amongst other issues, the FDA noted that Noven initiated a nationwide recall, on July 27, of no fewer than 125,250 Daytrana skin patches due to an adhesive peel force that was out of specification.

Yet another area of concern that may be of interest to any Daytrana lawyer currently handling a case was the finding that an in-house analyst at Noven’s Miami plant, who remained the lone individual undertaking cold flow testing for a two-year period, was inadequately trained.

Are such lapses contributing to Daytrana skin color loss? Any Daytrana attorney handling a Daytrana lawsuit will most certainly be asking that question.

My daughter has been on Daytrana for 2 yrs now she is 14 and we have done trial and error methods since she was 4. She is diagnosed High function ADHD. I finally suggested to the doctor that this was the only thing we hadn't tried yet. By the miracle of GOD this was the only thing that has worked for her. Her teachers are elated as are we! last yr was when it became a problem to get the patches due to manufacture delay. We had to go on liquid form which is a joke. Please. I'm begging you to keep this regularly in stock and available. It is the only thing that works and keeps us all sane! She has had no skin issues as you are describing. But you need to understand the severity of this problem with us parents and our children that need this for our kids. It's not good for them to go on and off different meds and we NEED this back in stock! Please!!!

My 9 year old had been on Daytrana for 5 years! No problems what so ever! Then out of the blue it became almost impossible to get my hands on. Even the Dr who was prescribing the medication knew nothing of the issue. It is actually the ONLY thing that has worked for him. Ive tried other medications and have only had problems! Please please bring this patch back without it i'm having to put my son in to counseling and having learning problems at his school also. He is angry all the time. Why not let the people that really want it and know the medication first hand get it! I never had any skin problems with my son after wearing the patch. I don't think that the VERY FEW complaints should warrant taking it away from the people that Truly relied on this medication should suffer.

Our lives too were manageable with the patch. Now my son is off the wall.

I am not understanding how a drug that is so effective can be this hard to come by. My son who is now 14 has been on Daytrana since he was in 2nd grade. We altered medications, trying Focalin, Concerta and Vyvance in which all made him very irritable, restless and unproductive. PLEASE... PLEASE reapprove and supply. There are millions of kids who are benefiting from this patch and in need. Thanks.

I have been waiting 2 months for a refill. This is the only medicine that has consistently worked. WTH. It's due to the manufacturer??? You are messing with people's lives.

I agree with comments left by other concerned parents regarding the ongoing shortages of Daytrana. Who is holding Noven accountable for releasing a drug and then pulling it out of the market? It is the ONLY drug that has worked for my highly impulsive sixteen year old; he can't properly metabolize traditional ADHD medications. For over a year now, this drug has been intermittently unavailable for various reasons. Meanwhile, we experiment with drugs that do not work, causing academic, social and psychological harm to my son. Noven should be ashamed of itself. Its sense of integrity is out the door as far as I am concerned. I appreciate you are out there to make a profit but you should not benefit from patent protection when you are holding back on something that so many can benefit from. To me, you are just acting recklessly.

Noven Pharmaceuticals... PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! My two adult sons have been taking DAYTRANA 30mg PATCHES since it was introduced in 2006. It was a godsend! Their ADHD became manageable and life for them a joy as well as for our family. No other medication worked before it came into existence! But this entire 2016 year has been a NIGHTMARE, especially for my oldest son! In addition to the ADHD symptoms being out of control, other "issues" have arisen due to the lack of DAYTRANA's availability. Do you have any idea what this is causing to children and adults who desperately need this medication? DO YOU? DO YOU REALLY? It is as if my sons need a near life-saving drug and cannot get it! Your company is playing with my sons' lives, as well as the lives of millions of others for whom DAYTRANA is the ONLY ANSWER to their disability. Now I am in a battle with the insurance company for my eldest son. The insurance company wants to cancel his right to continue taking DAYTRANA when/if it becomes available because he keeps "trying" other medications (on his 5th one as of today), without success I might add, in the hopes of finding a suitable substitute for DAYTRANA. Well, THERE IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE OUT THERE!!!!! DAYTRANA was the answer in 2006 (AND IS STILL THE ONLY ANSWER), when the boys were going through the list of oral medications used for ADD/ADHD, trying this one and that one, without much success. Some symptoms would ease up, while others would become intensely exacerbated and each medication reacted differently with each son. Then I saw an advertisement in a magazine at my dentist's office. I called my sons' psychiatrist immediately. Without hesitation, I got two prescriptions and within a week...Oh my goodness! LIFE AS WE KNEW IT CHANGED!!!
So, PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE!!! For the sake of all individuals who take DAYTRANA and it makes their lives manageable, consider this: DAYTRANA enables individuals to be functioning members of society; to be able to learn and experience academic successes; to be able to grow and mature emotionally; to be able to participate in and achieve successes in everyday life; to "fit in" socially and hopefully, not be made fun of for being different or behaving differently (at least no more so than the usual that occurs in schools); and allows the individual(s) and their family members some piece of mind knowing that their disability is being managed and under control better than it has ever been before. Please get the DAYTRANA patches back into continuous production as soon as humanly possible! NO MORE OF THIS START AND STOP PRODUCTION! Do whatever you need to do to get the FDA off your backs snd out of your facility! Follow the law and the required/defined guidelines you know you are supposed to follow as drug manufacturers. The FDA will inspect your facility and you know it. Stop trying to circumvent the process for profits! Look at the profits you have cost your company, your
shareholders, your employees, your CHOICE, etc. and at what expense??!? The health and well-being of millions of children and adults with a disability that greatly affects their quality of life! Isn't that the main purpose for the creation of the drug anyway? SURE IT IS! ???? Millions of children and adults are desperately waiting on Noven Pharmaceuticals to do what is the right thing to do while those affected...well, their quality of life is diminishing because of bureaucracy and continued delays that should not even be an issue. I don't know if your company is fully aware or even cares how devastating this incredible delay is. Each day that passes without a DAYTRANA 30mg patch for my sons to wear to control their ADHD, is a day where they each miss out on achieving everything they were meant to dream, believe, and accomplish on that particular day in their lives. And ALOT OF DAYS HAVE GONE UNFULFILLED THIS YEAR. 2017 isn't looking too good to start out either after eleven phone calls this morning alone trying to find DAYTRANA. And now no one is even forecasting a possible date for delivery to pharmacies. The same goes for most, if not everyone else, who is waiting on their DAYTRANA PATCHES. This is an ABSOLUTE TRAVESTY. There is NO ONE to whom I can formally complain nor can I file a complaint against Noven Pharmaceuticals. What good would it do anyway? This comment essentially falls on deaf ears except for anyone who reads this page.
The last thing I have to say is this: the situation with the production issues regarding DAYTRANA PATCHES breaks my heart as a mother when I know the solution is out there and it is a simple, relatively easy fix. GREED just got in the way in my humble opinion.

IS ANYONE LISTENING?? We desperately need this medication back, my daughter is suffering in school, home and socially. We are on other medication but it isn't the same. We have tried everything and this is the only thing that allows her to reach her full potential. I live in Ft Lauderdale which is close to Miami and I'm not able to get it?? They are claiming it's a shipping issue? Someone isn't disclosing something. What is the real problem?

My son has used Daytrana for 5 years now and it is the best and only medication that has worked well for him. It has now become difficult to find in my area and Noven has only said "should" be available by Jan 2017. Very unfair to the consumer/child who really relies on this medication to help them achieve success in school. As as business, Noven should be more proactive and concerned about their customers. We need to find a way to make them accountable and responsive to their customers. Thanks!

Please make this available soon. We've tried all the other medications and this is the only that works for smooth delivery. Please help our two children with ADHD and multiple other problems make it through the day.

We too depend on the availability of the Daytona Transdermal patch. We can not find it anywhere. Apparently no one else makes a Transdermal patch for kids who can't swallow pills without chewing them. This is our only way to get him the medicine he needs to be successful in school.
Thank you and good luck to everyone who is searching high and low for this medication.

I concur with all the above comments. The way the chemical enters the body with daytrana is smooth and consistent, unlike other ER meds. this is the ONLY med that works for my son. Equally key is how after we take it off, he gets his appetite back enough to eat dinner. It is critical to his well being and success that these patches become available soon. The website says they expect release in August - PLEASE!

Daytrana has been a life-saver for my child. Seriously - he was suicidal from the bullying and low self esteem from his ADHD actions. This is the only medication that has worked for him, as pills don't work with his high metabolism. People having issues with patches sticking - try a little rubbing alcohol before applying the patch & don't store the patch in high humidity areas. Skin care is key - use coconut oil to take off the patch & to keep the skin intact.

Novus - make more meds ASAP & get your manufacturing techniques up to date ASAP!

My son has been on the Daytrana patch for 5 yrs. it has been the only ADHD medicine that doesn't exacerbate his Tourette's as much as an oral stimulant. We can no longer find the patch. We've been very proactive with phone calls, pharmacy searches, but to no avail. He's now in Concerta and his tics are debilitating. I don't understand the issues or politics but we the consumers need answers.

We have been driving around every month to locate the patches for our son who takes a 10mg and a 30 mg patch since December 2015. We drive as much as 1 hour away to pick them up and we live in a large metro area. This month (June) we were unable to locate any patches. So now we are back to the Ritalin that he metabolizes too quickly and does not work well for the school day like the patches do. Let's get this resolved there are kids out there that this is helping tremendously. Kids are suffering with out this.patch

Like others I have spent countless hours on the phone checking stock of pharmacies, driving as far as 2 hours away to pick it up and even paying out of pocket for Daytrana because the pharmacy I was able to find it at finally doesn't take our insurance. Compounding the frustration of all this is the lack of understanding of these processes Drs., pharmacies and the manufacturer have. If the medication wasn't as successful as it was we clearly wouldn't put this kind of effort in to getting it. I'm sure most of us have tried multiple other meds until finding this one! Changing meds for kids isn't like changing a shirt. Would be nice if we had an outlet to explain what's going on so changes could be made. That being said, I'm going to call my local politicians and start talking about our difficulties! Hoping someone is willing to make pharmaceutical companies own the issues and communicate to people using their products so they can effectively and proactively plan for med shortages and/or discontinuations. Being left in the dark helps no one - not kids, their families, their friends, nor their teachers!

This needs to be resolved and soon. I have a kiddo with sensory issues on the Autism spectrum and a kiddo with ADHD, and Daytana is critical to their success. I spend hours searching and driving to wherever I can find the drug twice a month. I can't tell you how much time, money and stress this has cost our family! No other drug even comes close to doing the job like Daytrana. Please resolve this matter soon!

Struggling to find a suitable replacement for the daytrana patches. After years of experimenting with different ADHD medicines we finally found daytrana patches work best for my son. Now none of the pharmacies have it. It is rumored that they 're going to stop making it. This makes it difficult for my son to continue to do well. Very aggravating as a parent who only wants the best for their. child. His grades are suffering as well as getting bad reports from the school on his other I excellent behavior.

We need Daytrana to understand we have PARC next week. Very unfair for these kids depending upon a Manufacturer that doesn't seem to give a hoop about delivery ...there should be a a way to make them accountable some how. Let's find a way

The Daytrana patch has worked fine for my son but now the pharmact tells me that the manufacture is late shipping and now all the pharmacies in my area are out of them..Their are alot of kids in this area that use the patch and this is not a good thing for these kids to have to wait so long especially since they have STARR testing going on and the doctor has to issue another medicine to replace till they get the patches back in..It just not right for the kids..Thanks..
