Chantix: Quit Smoking aid linked to Suicide
Chantix has been linked to increased risk of suicides. The FDA informed healthcare professionals of reports of suicidal thoughts and aggressive and erratic behavior in patients who have taken Chantix, a smoking cessation product.

JUL-01-09: The FDA has notified healthcare professionals and patients that it requires the manufacturers of the smoking cessation aid varenicline (Chantix) to add new Boxed Warnings and develop patient Medication Guides highlighting the risk of serious neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients using these products. Severe depression, sleeplessness, feeling anxious, etc.
I was not able to sleep a full night when I was taking chantix. I kept getting dizzy and I was not able to function. Being on those pills made me feel useless during the time I took them and even afterwards. I gained so much weight from taking the medication, and I am still not able to lose it. I cried basically every day for no reason.

I'm amazed I lived through it
I took Chantix for 1 month hoping to quit a pack a day habit that I'd had for almost 20 years. I am a divorced mother to a wonderful 4 year old boy. I was working in a job I loved, but after being on Chantix for a couple of weeks I started experiencing an extreme chronic fatigue feeling, depression, desperation to have a few minutes away from my son (the whole time I was with him).

Chantix can lead to Suicide
 The FDA informed healthcare professionals of reports of suicidal thoughts and aggressive and erratic behavior in patients who have taken Chantix, a smoking cessation product. There are also reports of patients experiencing drowsiness that affected their ability to drive or operate machinery. A preliminary assessment reveals that many of the cases reflect new-onset of depressed mood, suicidal ideation, and changes in emotion and behavior within days to weeks of initiating Chantix treatment.
The role of Chantix in these cases is not clear because smoking cessation, with or without treatment, is associated with nicotine withdrawal symptoms and has also been associated with the exacerbation of underlying psychiatric illness. However, not all patients described in the cases had preexisting psychiatric illness and not all had discontinued smoking. Patients taking this product should report behavior or mood changes to their doctor and use caution when driving or operating machinery until they know how quitting smoking with Chantix may affect them.
