Senator Asks Company About Zimmer Hip Replacement Problems

. By Charles Benson

A senator recently asked that the company responsible for Zimmer hip replacements respond to reports of problems with its devices.

Republican Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa recently sent a letter to Zimmer Holdings' chief executive officer, David Dvorak, requesting a response to a number of paid medical consultants for the company who had cited problems with joint-replacement devices, according to Dow Jones Newswires.

The senator also asked Dvorak for the exact details of the complaints the company has received since January 2008.

Surgeon Larry Dorr had raised concerns about the Zimmer replacement hip cup, known as a Durom cup, two years ago, and Zimmer responded by suspending sales of the device in the US so that surgeons could be trained in how to use the device properly, reports the news source.

The orthopedic device company recently said it "welcomes the opportunity" to speak with Senator Grassley, according to the news provider.
