New York, NYIn an effort to combat the plight of workers in the food processing industry in New York, a non-profit workers' rights organization has filed a class action suit against Beverage Plus, a delivery company, over alleged violations of New York labor law.
The lawsuit charges that the distributor denied minimum wage and overtime pay to its delivery drivers and warehouse assistants, in addition to other rights violations. The case was brought forth by the Brandworkers Focus on the Food Chain initiative, a worker's rights organization that hopes to expose employer abuses in the Big Apple.
"My co-workers and I work hard and now we are demanding to be paid according to the law," says Richard Merino, a Brandworkers member and a driver at Beverage-Plus. "Wage theft is very damaging and we have chosen to tackle the problem by organizing together and taking collective action."
The plaintiffs are seeking class certification from the company in an attempt to recoup lost wages of employees who have been slighted by Beverage Plus over the past six years.
