Santa Clara, CAAnother police shooting of an innocent African American man, this time in a San Diego suburb, has sparked further protests claiming police misconduct and racism.
El Cajon police Chief Jeff Davis stated that officers were on site Tuesday, in El Cajon, when they shot and killed an unarmed black man. They had reportedly responded to a 911 call from the man’s sister who claimed her brother was "not acting like himself."
According to Davis, when the police arrived on the scene, the man drew an "object" from his pocket, "placed both hands together on it and extended it rapidly toward the officer, taking what appeared to be a shooting stance."
It was at this point that one of the police officers discharged a Taser. Another officer, the one who "had the object pointed at him," reportedly, "simultaneously" fired a gun, shooting the man several times.
Although police have not confirmed what the object was that the man drew from his pocket, they have stated that it was not a weapon. Some witness reports claim that the man had his hands in the air when he was shot, which conflicts with the police account.
According to the man’s sister, who was recorded by a bystander immediately after the shooting, she had told the operator on the 911 call that her brother was mentally ill. "I just called for help, and you came and killed him," she said. "Oh my God, you killed my brother. I called these people three times to help him.
The video, posted to Facebook Live, records an upset women saying she had called 911 asking for help. "He's sick, he needs help," she said through tears. "I told you guys he's sick. You guys came and killed my brother."
