Healthy Life Chemistry dietary supplement warning

. By Jane Mundy

The FDA on July 26 warned the public not to consume the dietary supplement B-50 Healthy Life Chemistry. The manufacturer, Purity First, has marketed the product as a vitamin B dietary supplement. However, a preliminary laboratory analysis conducted by the FDA determined the product contains methasterone, a controlled substance, and dimethazine. Both are two potentially harmful anabolic steroids not listed in the label and definitely not to be included in a dietary supplement.

The agency said it has received 29 reports of adverse events from consumers taking Healthy Life Chemistry by Purity First B-50 supplements. Some of the cases required hospitalization, but to date there were no cases of acute liver failure or death reported.

Symptoms include fatigue, muscle cramping, pain, and abnormal laboratory findings for liver, thyroid function and cholesterol levels. In a press release the FDA further said that females reported unusual hair growth and missed menstruation after using the B-50 Healthy Life Chemistry product and males reported impotence and findings of low testosterone. Consumers are warned to stop using the product immediately and if they experience any of the above symptoms to consult a health care professional and report their experience to the US health regulators.

Methasterone and dimethazine and other anabolic steroids are known to cause acute liver injury and have serious long-term side effects in women, men and children. These types of steroids are also linked to increased risk of heart attack and stroke; masculinization of women; shrinkage of the testicles; breast enlargement; infertility in males; and short stature in children.

Farmingdale, N.Y.-based, MiraHealth Products Ltd. manufactures the B-50 supplements, which are sold online and in drugstores. To date the company has not recalled its product, nor has it warned consumers about the potentially dangerous ingredients in the product.
