Police Investigating Toyota's Responsibility in Massachusetts Car Crash

Police are investigating a car crash in which a 2010 Toyota Rav4 crashed into a plastic surgeon's office in Yarmouth.

The driver, Ann Wilkins, 70, struck the outside wall of the Cape Cod Plastic and Hand Surgery office on Tuesday afternoon. Investigators found that the Wilkins had struck an adjacent wall before driving approximately 10 feet into the actual office. Wilkins was treated for minor injuries on the scene and was later transferred to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation. No one else was injured.

Wilkins' son, David, claims that the fault lies not with his mother, but with the vehicle, which was part of the massive recall of Toyota vehicles over unwanted acceleration problems.

"She's never been [in] a car accident, she's never been pulled over, so yes, I feel strongly my mom was acting correctly," David Wilkins told NECN news. "She put her foot brake and it accelerated and went into the building, and when she looked down her foot was on the brake."

Though an initial review of the vehicle showed both the accelerator and the break to be working properly, investigators plan to conduct a more thorough examination in the coming days, according to Yarmouth Police Lieutenant Steven Xiarhos.
