Woman Awarded $4.7M For Perforated Esophagus

Broward County, FL: Susan Kalitan, whose esophagus was perforated during surgery, has been awarded $4.7 million in settlement of her medical malpractice lawsuit.

In 2007, Kalitan underwent wrist surgery and was intubated by Eleidy Miedes. Following discharge from the hospital, Kalitan complained of chest pain and returned to the emergency room at the hospital. She was diagnosed with sepsis resulting from food entering her chest from the perforated esophagus.

In her lawsuit, Kalitan alleged that Miedes placed the endotracheal tube in her throat with too much force. She also claimed she did not know a student would be working on her, especially one on academic probation.
