Prozac Use Found to be Substantial Factor in Teen's Suicide Attempt

Atlanta, GA: The mother of a young girl who died three years after attempting suicide, and who had been prescribed the antidepressant Prozac, has been awarded a $3,459,892 judgement in her medical negligence lawsuit.

Her teenage daugher attempted to kill herself by hanging and consequently suffered severe brain damage, the suit stated. The suit alleged that Prozac was contraindicated based on prior FDA warnings.

The court determined that certain deviations from the standard of care, as well as the use of the Prozac itself, were the substantial contributing causes of girl's attempted suicide. The teen had been treated at a federally-funded medical clinic, where she was seen by a nurse practitioner.
