Jury Awards $200,000 to Couple Who Sued Their Lawyer

New Jersey: A jury has awarded a husband and wife $200,000 as settlement of their lawsuit brought against their previous lawyer who, they alleged, failed to inform them of a settlement offer at a previous jury trial of their medical malpractice suit.

Karen and Gary Oliver had engaged Gerald Stockman in a medical malpractice case that resulted in a $300,000 verdict that was twice reduced to $75,000.

The Olivers said the defense had offered to settle for $400,000 but that Stockman didn't tell them about it. Stockman claimed that it was offered moments before the verdict and he did tell them about it, but recommended that the verdict would be higher because he "felt confident we were going to win this case." The jury found that Stockman failed to adequately inform the Olivers.
