Jury Awards $2.7 Million in Asbestos Mesothelioma Lawsuit

Cameron County, TX: Oscar Torres, a former pipe fitter who worked for Brown and Root to repair pipes in a chemical plant owned by Union Carbide Corp, has recovered $2.7 million in his asbestos lawsuit.

Torres worked for the company in the 1970s and the job required that he handle or work in close proximity to asbestos-containing insulation as well as asbestos-containing gaskets manufactured by Garlock Sealing Technologies.

In 2009 Torres was diagnosed with asbestos mesothelioma, and he and his wife filed a lawsuit naming Union Carbide and Garlock Industries as defendants.

The jury found Union Carbide and Garlock each 45 percent liable. Brown & Root, who was not a party in the suit, was found 10 percent liable.
