Medicare Fraud

Marion County, SC: (May-19-08) The federal government brought charges against Marion County Medical Center, alleging that the facility engaged in Medicare fraud. The suit stated that the facility submitted claims to Medicare for worthless services in October 2006. The allegations were brought only months after settling a previous similar case was settled with a $3.75 million payout. This case too, like the previous, was brought after a whistleblower complaint, that claimed that the facility was defrauding the federal Medicare program, by submitting claims for services not provided.

As part of a settlement reached in the suit, the facility agreed to pay back $36,404, which was originally provided in 2006 to a Medicare beneficiary in the hospital's emergency room. Sources stated that though the facility agreed to settle the lawsuit, Marion Regional Healthcare System, which operates the center, did not admit any liability or wrongdoing.
