Inmate Suicide

Adair County, MO: (May-06-08) Tettie Maheu, the mother of Chris Maheu, a former jail inmate, brought a wrongful death lawsuit against Adair County, Sheriff Leonard Clark and six jail workers, after Chris hanged himself in his cell in the Adair County Jail in December 2003. The suit named the six workers who were employed at the time of the death. The suit stated that the death occurred as a result of the jail's negligence, and that jail staff did not do enough to keep Maheu from committing suicide.

As part of a settlement reached in the case, County officials announced that the county had agreed to pay the family of Chris Maheu $150,000 to resolve the wrongful death claims. [KTVO TV NEWS: COUNTY SETTLES SUIT]
