Sago Tragedy

Charleston, WV: (Apr-30-08) Families of several miners, who were in the 2006 Sago mine disaster, brought lawsuits against Burrell Mining Products of New Kensington, PA, and Raleigh Mine and Industrial Supply of Mount Hope, two suppliers, who they claim were liable for the explosion. Court papers indicate that Sago survivor Randal McCloy Jr., his wife, Anna, and the families of 10 deceased miners had filed a series of lawsuits against mine owner International Coal Group and several other companies including the two suppliers.

In a recent development in the suit, sources close to the proceedings said that the defendants had reached a tentative settlement with the families, though they did not reveal the exact terms of the agreement. Lawyers said that the settlement must be approved by Kanawha County Circuit Judge Charles King. The payout will come from Burrell Mining Products of New Kensington, PA, and Raleigh Mine and Industrial Supply of Mount Hope. They produced and distributed the foam Omega seals used to close off an abandoned section of the mine where the explosion occurred, and therefore were implicated in the lawsuit.
