Polygraph Examiner

Gettysburg, PA: (Apr-24-08) Gettysburg Police Sgt. Sharon Gelwicks brought a lawsuit against the Gettysburg Borough, former police chief Rolf Garcia and Mayor William Troxell, alleging that they discriminated against her starting in 2005 and created a hostile work environment. Her lawsuit sought an unspecified amount in damages and punitive costs. Gelwicks claimed that she was qualified for training as a polygraph examiner but initially was denied that opportunity. Later, when she eventually was trained, male officers received the training more easily than she did. The lawsuit also accused Garcia of spreading rumors about Gelwicks and referring to her in a derogatory light.

As part of a settlement reached between Gelwicks and Gettysburg officials, the case was resolved with the help of a mediator, for an undisclosed amount. Borough records show that Gelwicks, promoted to sergeant earlier this year, was placed on administrative leave from the police department recently. She was one of four Gettysburg police officers who applied for the job and passed a written test, but she was the only one to pass the oral exam.
