Auto Accident Fatalities

Anderson, SC: (Mar-20-08) The families of three Anderson residents brought a wrongful death lawsuit against Robert Blair of McCormick, alleging that his driving under the influence of alcohol, killed the three in an accident on 2007 New Year's Eve. According to court records, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division officials said on Feb. 22 that 61-year-old Blair was not legally drunk when he was involved in a head-on collision. Officials stated that Blair's blood tested as having 0.02 percent alcohol and no illegal drugs. The suit stated that Blair was driving a truck owned by Craft Construction of Starr, when he collided head-on with a Toyota occupied by Andrew McAbee, 75, Syblene McAbee, 66, and Arlene Sorrells, 68. All three died as a result of the crash.

In January 2008, a $10 million wrongful death lawsuit was filed by attorneys for the husband and two children of Arlene Sorrells. On Jan. 16, 08, another attorney representing the McAbee's children filed a lawsuit seeking actual, and punitive, damages of more than $100,000 for each of the accident victims. As part of a settlement reached in the case, sources stated that a $1.85 million dollar settlement has been agreed upon by the families. Legal counsel claimed that the settlement money would be divided equally among the three estates. [INDEPENDENT MAIL: FAMILIES OF THREE AUTO ACCIDENT VICTIMS IN ANDERSON SETTLE FOR $1.85 MILLION]
