Animal Control

Port St. Lucie, FL: (Feb-21-08) Melissa Behres brought a lawsuit against the city, alleging that she was wrongfully terminated. The suit claimed that city Manager Don Cooper fired Behres in October 2007 after she smacked a co-worker in the back of the head during a September 2007 animal control meeting. An investigation found she violated several city rules, including showing discourtesy, demonstrating improper conduct and threatening or intimidating a co-worker. Records show that Behres had worked for animal control since May 1996. Sources close to the case stated that a settlement had been reached in the case, in which Behres agreed to drop an appeal of her termination by the city in exchange for the chance to voluntarily resign. Under the terms of the agreement, Behres resignation officially took effect Feb. 6. The city also agreed to pay Behres close to $10,000 as part of the agreement, which was made public, resolving the dispute. [TCPALM: WRONGFUL TERMINAITON]
