False Abuse Accusations

Portland, OR: (Feb-20-08) Fred Lewis, a longtime shop teacher, brought a lawsuit against the town and school district over false allegations accusing him of having a sexual relationship with a student. Sources close to the case stated that Lewis won a jury verdict in Lincoln County Superior Court in July 2007 in the defamation lawsuit. In a recent development, a settlement was reached after the school district decided against an appeal. As per the terms of the agreement, the teacher from Boothbay Harbor agreed to a $320,000 payout from the town and school district, resolving the six-year-old defamation case. Besides the payout, the settlement includes an apology from the school superintendent and high school principal who knew the allegations were false but failed to inform Lewis and allowed him to quit.
