Social Studies Teacher

Boca Raton, FL: (Jan-28-08) Curtis Sherrod, a former Boca Raton teacher, brought charges against the School District of Palm Beach County, alleging that he was unlawfully terminated. Sources stated that the dispute between the two parties ensued for more than four years. Sherrod was a social studies teacher at Olympic Heights High School in Boca Raton until he was terminated in 2004. District reports state that he was fired because of failure to correct teaching deficiencies. At the time, Sherrod, an African American, claimed he was unjustly fired because school administrators did not agree with his infusion of African American curriculum into his history studies and for speaking out about exploitation of African American athletes.

Records show that Sherrod filed charges with the Division of Administrative Hearings (DOAH), but those claims were rejected. As part of a settlement reached, the school district agreed to pay Sherrod $272,000, resolving the dispute. He will receive $147,000 in back wages and $125,000 as settlement and release of all claims against the School Board except one pending $20 million lawsuit. Also under the settlement, Sherrod waived his right for reinstatement as an employee of the Palm Beach County School District. [BOCA RATON NEWS: FIRED TEACHER]
