Fire Protocol

Columbia, SC: (Jan-13-08) State regulators brought charges against the owners of the Sofa Super Store, a furniture store that burned down and killed nine firefighters, alleging that the store was negligent in their fire protection protocols. The regulators claimed that the store had three violations in the June 18, 2007 blaze which contributed to the nation's greatest loss of firefighters since the attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Sources stated that the store was fined for having padlocked doors and cited for fire doors that did not work. The business was also fined for not having an emergency action plan in place for its employees.

Initially, the store was fined $32,775 for three violations, but recent records in the case show that the owners of the store paid $13,110 in fines, resolving the lawsuit. In agreeing to settle, the business did not admit any wrongdoing. Additionally, the store also agreed to review fire safety procedures at its three other locations in the Charleston area.
