Vancouver, BC: (Nov-09-07) The Musqueam First Nation Band brought a lawsuit against the popular University Golf Course as part of a controversial land deal it worked towards brokering with the government. Sources said that the band reached an agreement, which resolved a number of outstanding court cases and stirred emotions among those who feared a loss of the course and others worried about lost parkland because it involved tradeoffs by the provincial government and the band.
As part of the deal, sources confirmed that the Musqueam agreed to leave the course largely intact until 2083. Further, the Musqueam will also receive two parcels of land amounting to 22 hectares from Pacific Spirit Park, a municipal area crisscrossed with trails used by hikers, cyclists and horseback riders. The band will also receive a $20.3 million cash payout.
