US Federal GovernmentBaltimore, MD: (Jul-07-07) Joseph Schultz and his girlfriend filed civil lawsuits against the US government after Schultz was mistakenly shot by an FBI agent in 2002. Schultz, who was 20 at the time of the shooting, suffered a shattered jaw, but survived the shooting. He claimed that he was unarmed at the time of the accident. Schultz's girlfriend at the time, Kristen Harkum, then 16, was sitting next to Schultz when he was shot. The two filed $10 million lawsuits in US District Court in Baltimore, arguing that their constitutional rights were violated. That case was dismissed in June 2007 after the parties committed to resolve the case without a trial. In a settlement reached, Harkum was awarded $350,000. The federal government agreed to pay Schultz $1.3 million to resolve the civil rights dispute.
