El Paso, TX

El Paso, TX: (Jun-26-07) Lisa Elizondo, former El Paso City Attorney, filed a federal lawsuit against Mayor John Cook in 2006, accusing him of firing her out of ethnic prejudice. In June 2007, she filed two more lawsuits against the city and the mayor. In the two latest suits, one filed in 34th District Court and the other in County Court at Law No. 3, Elizondo charges that City Council violated the Texas Open Meetings Act on the day she was fired and that Cook slandered her by telling a former council member that she was having sexual relations with former Mayor Joe Wardy and the city's former chief administrative officer. Elizondo filed her first suit against the city in August 2006 in federal district court accusing Cook of making it known he would fire her if he won the mayor's election in 2005. In a settlement reached, the city awarded her $500,000. Cook denied all the remarks Elizondo attributed to him in the lawsuits. [EL PASO TIMES: ATTORNEY DISCRIMINATION]
