MidAmerican Energy and Le Mars, IA

Des Moines, IA: (Jun-02-07) The US Environmental Protection Agency filed a lawsuit against MidAmerican Energy and the city of Le Mars, alleging that there were unchecked environmental violations at a gas plant. The EPA accused the energy company and city of not ensuring that coal tar and other wastes from the Le Mars Coal Gas Superfund Site were properly disposed. The lawsuit alleged that MidAmerican and the city were liable as owners and operators of the plant. In a settlement reached, MidAmerican Energy and the city of Le Mars have agreed to pay the federal government $4.6 million. Under terms of the agreement, MidAmerican and Le Mars will divide the settlement costs, and the city will help the Environmental Protection Agency clean up the site. [KCCI NEWS: COAL AND TAR WASTE]
