Walsall Council

Elizabeth McDonald was fired from Walsall Council through a fax in April 2005 while on sick leave after having a thyroid operation. She filed a complaint with an Employment Tribunal claiming disability discrimination and unfair dismissal. She presented a list containing £500,000 in losses based on an estimate of what she would lose in salaries, bonuses, and pension in future years as a result of losing her job. Walsall Council later announced that it had agreed to pay McDonald almost £130,000. The settlement comes shortly after Walsall Council had to pay out £650,000 to a whistleblower who was wrongfully fired after reporting his employers regarding the misuse of public money.
