Wine and Liquor Suppliers

Albany, NY: New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer investigated fifteen national wine and liquor suppliers regarding illegal incentives. The suppliers allegedly offered rebates and gifts to obtain unfair preferential treatment from retailers and restaurants; such incentives can result in higher prices and limit choices for consumers. Well known brands such as Gallo, Bacardi and Jim Beam have agreed to ban the use of preferential discounts, rebates, allowances, cash and gifts to buy favor for their products. All fifteen suppliers have agreed to pay a $2.3 million settlement. (Oct-30-06) [INTERNATIONAL HERALD TRIBUNE: ALCOHOL INCENTIVES]
