Western World Insurance Company

Between January 1, 2002 and May 7, 2004 Western World Insurance Company sent adult family home operators in Washington and Oregon a Notice of Cancellation/Non-Renewal of insurance coverage that made reference to mental illness or a mental illness designation associated with the insured's adult residential care facility license. The Fair Housing Center of Washington and the Fair Housing Council of Oregon accused Western World Insurance Company of discriminating against people with mental disabilities. A lawsuit alleged violations of the federal Fair Housing Act in the company's practice of terminating and refusing to renew insurance coverage for adult family homes serving people with mental illnesses. Western World has reached a settlement and awarded the Fair Housing Group $2 million. (Aug-01-06) [TACOMA DAILY INDEX]
