Calaveras County, California

A sex discrimination lawsuit against Calaveras County Sheriff Dennis Downum has been dropped. Kenneth Cantamout, a part-time Copperopolis rancher who is gay, alleged that, in 2002, due to his sexual orientation, Downum denied him a volunteer job with the department. Cantamout said he didn't have the time or money to fight a legal battle against Calaveras County, who noted that Cantamout had filed a previous and similar lawsuit against the San Francisco Police Department. He was seeking a $95,000 settlement from Calaveras County. (Jul-24-06) [UNION DEMOCRAT]
