Tucson Unified School District

In February 2004, high school basketball star Joe Kay scored a two handed slam dunk in the final minutes of the game. Fans surrounded him in celebration, but in doing so, trampled him and tore his carotid artery. Kay suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed on one side of his body. The Kay family filed a personal injury lawsuit against the Tucson Unified School District and the two students held responsible for his injuries. Kay will receive $2.9 million from the school district and $600,000 from the homeowners' insurance policies of the two students' parents. (Apr-13-06) [ARIZONA DAILY STAR]
