System Transport Services of Spokane, WA

On September 1, 2001 the Pierce family was driving on I-65 when the family car got a flat tire. Allan J. Pierce pulled over to the shoulder; he and his wife Mary got out to fix the tire and left their 6 year old son, Allan M. Pierce, strapped in his car seat in the back seat of the vehicle. Just then, a flatbed semi truck carrying cherry-picker lifts rolled over as it was coming out of a construction zone. One of the lifts struck Allan J. Pierce then the struck the car, which burst into flames. The parents were unable to get Allan M. out of the burning inferno. Allan M. suffered a severed leg and the family filed a wrongful death and personal injury lawsuit against System Transport Services. A federal judge approved a $15.6 million settlement.
