Kenmore Ovens Recalled Due to Fire Hazard

Frigidaire Canada, a sister company of Electrolux Home Products Inc., is recalling about 7,500 Kenmore brand wall ovens. The ovens pose a possible fire and burn hazard to consumers when, during extended broiling, a gas buildup in the oven cavity escapes when the oven door is opened. This can cause flames to escape from the oven door resulting in possible singed hair and burns to the hands and face.

The effected Kenmore self-cleaning ovens were 24-inches wide, gas and propane models, sold from September 2004 through October 2007 at Sears, Sears Hardware, Kmart and the great indoors stores nationwide. The model numbers are 790.30472400, 790.30473400, 790.30474400, 790.30479400, and were available in white, black, bisque and stainless steel. The model numbers of the ovens that are part of this recall can be found on the frame on the left side of the oven cavity.

We had a simple, but glass top Frigidaire oven. One day, the oven was not even turned on, it turned on by itself & went to an extremely high heat & caught on fire. One of our sons just happened to be walking by as it happened & yelled for my husband & he came running, but could not turn it off without turning the breaker off & pulling the plug. We replaced the Frigidaire with a very expensive Sears Kenmore Elite 40" double electric oven. It worked fine for about five years or so & then the bake element on it burned & caught on fire & burned the board. We replaced the element & the board & then it did it again. The oven keeps going to extremely high heat when not even turned on, sparking, & burning. The electricity & everything has been checked out. We have surge protectors on our home, everything is protected, but this very expensive oven burned out twice. We are now just without an oven as we cannot afford another one now. Sears & Roebuck has been no help.

My sister was baking bread and when she went to turn off the oven, it made a noise then started on fire. The oven is a Kenmore 30'' self-clean coil range. No one was injured or hurt in this case; however, there is still smoke damage, and the fear that it could have burnt my house and/or those in it.
