Cancer Center Warns of Too Much Cell Phone Use

Head of Center Issues Warning to his Staff

Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, broke ground yesterday when he issued a warning to his staff to limit cell phone use because of the possible risk for cancer. In a memo to 3000 faculty at the center, he recommended that children only use cell phones in emergency situations, and that adults use the speakerphone function on their phones, to avoid contact between the head and the phone.

Herberman based his warning on as yet unpublished data, believing that people should take action now, because science can take years to find definitive answers.

At issue is the possibility of exposure to electromagnetic radiation.
