Ignore Fire Hazards at your Own Risk

Keeping a fire extinguisher in your home can help you extinguish a small fire that could develop into a major blaze.

Portable heaters must be kept more than 3 feet from anything that could catch on fire. Heaters should never be left on when the house is empty.

Frayed wires and electrical cords should be repaired or replaced, sockets should not be overloaded.

Kindling, matches and flammable items should be kept clear of fireplaces, and screens should be used to contain sparks.

Make sure cigarettes are completely extinguished before throwing them into the trash, and avoid smoking in bed. Make sure cooking areas are free of combustibles. Never attempt to use water to put out a grease fire - smother it instead, with a lid. Plan escape routes, and plan a place for family members to meet in the event of a fire.
