Study: Some Doctors Fail to Disclose Ties to DePuy Orthopaedics, Other Companies

Chicago, ILA new study revealed that orthopedic surgeons who earn $1 million or more from medical device companies often do not reveal their ties to the companies in medical journal articles. One such company named in the study is DePuy Orthopedics.

span itemprop="image" itemscope itemtype="https://schema.org/ImageObject" style="display:block">The study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, found that 41 doctors were paid a total of $114 million in 2007 but only half of the articles published the following year mentioned the doctors' connections to the medical device companies, reports USA Today.

"If you can't find information about a $1 million payment to an author in an orthopedic journal on issues that are directly relevant to products for which they're being paid, then something's wrong," David Rothman, one of the authors of the study, said.

Along with DePuy Orthopedics, which made payments between $1 million and $8 million, were Zimmer, Biomet, Stryker and Smith & Nephew.

DePuy was recently forced to issue a recall for a number of its hip replacement parts that were implemented in approximately 93,000 people around the world, according to Dow Jones Newswires.
