Texas Therapist Begins Using New Method to Treat PTSD

. By Charles Benson

A therapist in El Paso, Texas, recently began using a treatment that she believes will not only help veterans who are battling post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but also children who suffer from the condition.

Cathy Gaytan, the director of Clinical Services for the El Paso Child Guidance Center, developed a new therapy called eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, or EMDR, for the treatment of PTSD, according to KFOX 14.

Gaytan said that the therapy is helpful for children coping with PTSD.

"You might use hand taps, you might use buzzers, you might use finger movements, the point is to stimulate the brain, alternate it from the left side to the right, while processing the traumatic event," she told the news source. "EMDR works by helping the brain process the traumatic event. Once it has processed the traumatic event, the hope is that the symptoms will go down."

The news source reports that EMDR is one of the recommended methods for the treatment of PTSD, including Veterans' PTSD, resulting from natural disasters, war and terrorism.
