A man was recently killed in a Springfield accident after his vehicle struck a deer near the southwest Missouri city.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, Mark D. Pross of Pacific, Missouri, died after his car overturned as a result of his collision with a deer on Interstate 44, reports the Kansas City Star.

Authorities said that the 58 year old was driving in the westbound lanes of the interstate when he struck the animal with his 2004 Dodge Intrepid. The crash reportedly caused Pross's vehicle to drive off the road and into a ditch, where it overturned.

The Missouri Highway Patrol said that Pross was pronounced dead at the scene of the Springfield accident.

Family members told KSDK that Pross was driving to a job opportunity in Arkansas when the fatal accident occurred.

The accident occurred in the early morning hours on Monday. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2008, there were eight fatal accidents in Missouri on Monday mornings between midnight and 2:59 am.
