Research Study Seeks Means to Avoid Reglan Side Effects

In an effort to avoid the complications that can arise from the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), such as tardive dyskinesia, scientists at Avail Clinical Research have begun a series of studies seeking a new treatment for the debilitating disease.

GERD is a potentially serious condition that causes the contents of the stomach to leak backwards from the stomach into the esophagus. The syndrome is characterized by persistent heartburn, a sour or bitter taste in the mouth and severe chest pains.

Of the treatment options available for the disease, one of the most popular is Reglan, prolonged use of which has been linked to potentially fatal disorders like Tardive Dyskinesia, Neruoleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS) and Parkinson's disease.

The new study will conduct a series of physical examinations, laboratory tests and experimental medications to pinpoint the best treatment options for people suffering from GERD.

"We are very pleased to begin the systemic evaluation of our research studies to help find a viable investigational treatment solution to those suffering from [GERD]," said Bruce G Rankin, the Vice Chief of Medicine at the study's headquarters. "We believe that these research studies will build significantly on the data generated by other studies conducted on investigational treatment options for GERD."
