A three-year-old boy who was injured in a Kansas City accident involving a hit-and-run driver died recently, the Kansas City Star reports.

According to the news provider, police say Landon Michael Carlson was hit by a car after he crossed the street to check the mailbox that was in front of his house in east Kansas City.

A 64-year-old man who is reportedly a suspect in the hit-and-run incident decided to turn himself in shortly after the boy passed away, the news source said. Kansas City police chief Sergeant Bill Mahoney said that it had not yet been decided which charges will be sought against the man.

Mahoney explained that two boys who were approximately eight years old were with Landon in the street and noticed that the van was weaving down the road prior to hitting the young child. Mahoney added that Landon was on the outside of a white "fog line" that indicates the end of the pavement.

The Associated Press reports that witnesses said the van was driven by an older white man who drove off after striking the child.
