South Boston, VAOfficials at South Boston Elementary School have informed parents and faculty that an outbreak of Methicilin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, or MRSA infection, has hit the school.
Deputy Superintendent Larry Clark claims that the infection came from a single student that was remanded to the care of a physician. Local parents received a letter detailing the steps that they can take to prevent the spread of the infection, including basic hygiene and frequent rest.
The MRSA hospital infection is a form of staph that is highly resistant to antibiotics and can lead to skin infections, pneumonia, bloodstream and surgical wound infections. It is caused by bacteria commonly carried on the skin of otherwise healthy people. The Centers for Disease Control and prevention estimate that one in 100 people carry the bacteria with them at any given time.
In recent year, MRSA infections have taken on a more serious tone, producing toxins that have caused a number of serious skin and soft tissue infections and pneumonia.
