Dallas, TXUS Medicaid and Medicare officials have reportedly found a number of issues at Dallas County's general hospital, including a knee replacement implant failure that occurred in 2008.
The Associated Press reports that the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services decided to conduct the investigation into Parkland Memorial Hospital after the Dallas Morning News reported on the case of Jessie Mae Ned, whose knee replacement surgery necessitated follow-up surgeries, infections, $1 million in Medicaid costs and, ultimately, the amputation of her left leg.
The inspection report indicated that the hospital did not have a formal policy in 2008 for the faculty supervision of doctors who were enrolled in the residency program of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. In the case of Ned, records indicate that a faculty surgeon was on hand during the surgery but did not demonstrate any involvement in caring for the patient after the surgery, the news source said.
Parkland is currently providing Ned with physical therapy, according to the news provider.
The original Parkland Memorial Hospital opened in 1894.
