Guacamole Dips Avocado-less Consumer Fraud

A lawsuit has been filed and is seeking class action status on behalf of all purchasers of a certain so-labeled "guacamole" products made and marketed by Kraft. Avocados are the main ingredient in guacamole. Secondary ingredients usually include tomatoes, onions, citrus juice and spices. Kraft guacamole dip contains only 2% avocado and consists largely of partially hydrogenated vegetable oils and whey.

The lawsuit is investigating alleged fraud in the sale of so-called "guacamole" that contains relatively little, if any, avocado. The makers of these products include Dean's, Marie's, Herr's, T. Marzetti's, and even Kraft.

Avocados are the main ingredient in guacamole. Secondary ingredients usually include tomatoes, onions, citrus juice and spices. But the so-called guacamole dips in question contain little or no avocado. Avocado is the 6th or 7th ingredient in most of these dipsâ€"meaning there's not much in there. Herr's doesn't list avocado as one of its ingredients, just "avocado powder." All these dips contain significantly more soybean oil, coconut oil, and/or other vegetable oils than they do avocado. Often these oils are partially hydrogenated. But these manufacturers still sell their dips as "guacamole." Herr's and T. Marzetti's even have a picture of an avocado on their labels, with the apparent intent to mislead consumers to believe their dip is really guacamole.
