To date, about 35,000 transvaginal mesh lawsuits have been filed against the device manufacturers by women alleging to have suffered from a number of severe health issues, including pain during sex, the erosion of vaginal tissue, infection and even death, among others.

Bard, Johnson & Johnson and American Medical Systems are among the defendants involved in lawsuits that have been consolidated into six separate multidistrict litigations with monthly status meetings held in Charleston, West Virginia.

The US District judge overseeing the MDLs originally suggested individual trials of bellwether cases that would be representative of all the lawsuits against the four manufacturers with the largest and oldest cases.

CR Bard, which manufactures Avaulta, Faslata, Pelvicol and PelviSoft products, was the first defendant to have lawsuits heard, having to pay one claimant $2 million including punitive damages and settling another case outside of court.

And according to The National Trial Lawyers organization, as of this May, Endo, the parent company of American Medical Systems, has agreed to an $830 million settlement of around 20,000 lawsuits over its transvaginal mesh products.

Overall, attorneys for the plaintiffs estimate there could be as many as 60,000 cases involving some 80 products, as more lawsuits continue to be filed.
