Kadant Composites Inc. Defective GeoDeck™ Boards and Railings

In August 2005, approximately 11,000 GeoDeck™ composite deck boards and railings were recalled after Kadant Composites Inc. (the manufacturer) reported more than 370 complaints of accelerated aging of the building materials.

GeoDeck™ composite deck boards and railings that were manufactured between April 2002 and October 2003 were made without adequate amounts of antioxidants, which could result in excessive degradation and potential safety hazards.

GeoDeck™ is a composite decking product that looks similar to natural wood and was sold in three colors including: driftwood, cedar and mahogany. The decking materials were manufactured between April 2002 and October 2003. Each decking and railing component has a manufacturing date stamp (day/month/year) on the cut end, which may still be visible on uninstalled materials.

The defective products were manufactured in the United States (Kadant is based in Bedford, Mass.) and were sold by retail lumberyards nationwide from April 2002 through July 2005 for anywhere from $2 and $2.50 per linear foot.

Decks affected by oxidative degradation are potentially unsafe and should not be used until they are repaired or replaced.

Kadant's [website] advises consumers how to find out if their GeoDeck™ materials have been affected by the following:

  • Determine if the material surface is becoming soft and loose
    Test the surface of boards and/or railings by scratching them with a fingernail or the corner of a credit card. If they scratch easily, your materials may have been affected;

  • Determine if the deck surface has cracks
    Visually inspect the surface for cracks. Even if you find hairline cracks, the cracks can grow, making the deck unsafe;

  • Determine if the deck boards are showing signs of erosion
    Examine deck boards for signs of erosion such as crumbling. This deck is unsafe. You should discontinue use of the deck immediately, and replace the deck.

Kadant Composites LLC sold the GeoDeck™ composite decking and railing business in 2005, and used the proceeds from the sale to administer the warranty and recall programs, pay warranty claims and other expenses. Kadant Composites LLC expended all of its funds and ceased operations on September 30, 2007. The warranty and recall programs have been terminated.

My family and purchased this decking material in 2008. We purchased over 3000 sq2 and have had no luck on a refund or replacement of product. Our original installer shored up a few places here and there, butt it still looks like crap. I would not reccoment anyone buying this product.

I had a 28' x 12' foot deck installed summer of 2002. The product was called GEO DECKING.

It has rioted out in several spots, softened and has huge caps. I am so angry not notified of the lawsuit and
And really can't afford to redo this deck.

Since I live in Wisconsin, the only lumber yard caring this product was Mayfair Lumber in Chicago

I had to have a special shipment and paid a lot of rmoney plus installation. Any ideas please, thankyou

one main board cracked all the way down the middle. railing broke in middle and the skirting that covers up the 2x8 on the sides to give finished look broke or busted in half. Biggest thing is I don't even trust it to have my kids on it!!!

Two of our deckboards are severly rotted leaving a dangerous hole in our deck! Other boards are cracking and will also rot through well before the warranty is up.

We had a new home built three years ago and the builder used Geodeck for the decking. Our house is only used on vacations, perhaps a month or two each year so there is not much activity on the deck. During our last visit I noticed a plank on one of the steps had cracked and upon further inspection the material had rotted. This led me to investigate Geodeck, where I found out about the recall and the fact that Kadant Composites was out of business. The current owner of Geodeck, LDI Composites, has refused to cover the deck under warranty. I am now pursuing the builder who should have known that Geodeck was under recall when they built the deck in Octover 2004.

One of these was a step in a series of 14 steps leading up to the deck. A hole appeared as people would use the step and got progessively worse as the material rotted. We replaced the board at our cost. Now another one is rotting on the side of the deck.

The decking material that I purchased is crumbling and making the deck unsafe for use. It should be covered by warranty, but the "Kadant" website states they are out of funds.

Entire deck will need to be replaced including materials and labor. We have been unable to use our back deck for fear cracked boards will give way and cause bodily harm.
