Woman Awarded $110M in J&J Talc Cancer Lawsuit

Santa Clara, CA: A jury in Missouri has found against Johnson & Johnson (J&J) in the latest ovarian cancer talcum powder lawsuit brought by Lois Slemp of Virginia.

The jury awarded Slemp $110 in damages based on evidence substantiating her claims that she developed ovarian cancer in August 2012 after using J&J's baby powder and Shower to Shower products on her genital area every day for 40 years. (AP)

The jury found in favor of Slemp on all her claims, which include conspiracy, breach of implied warranty and negligence.

According to the ruling, Slemp has been awarded punitive damages of $66 million from J&J, $39 million from J&J Consumer and $50,000 from Imerys Talc America Inc., J&J’s talc supplier, and co-defendant.

Additionally, the jury awarded Slemp $5.4 million in compensatory damages.

Johnson & Johnson said in a statement that it will appeal the ruling. The case is Lois Slemp v. Johnson & Johnson et al., case number 1422-CC09326-01, in the 22nd Judicial Circuit Court of Missouri.
