$1.6M Settlement Awarded in DuPont Tephlon Cancer Lawsuit

This is a settlement for the Environment Law lawsuit.

Santa Clara, CA: A jury has awarded a $1.6 million settlement in the case of a woman who developed cancer from exposure to tephlon. Clara Bartlett filed a suit against DuPont alleging that tephlon leaks at a DuPont plant before 2004 entered the local waterways which resulted in her developing kidney cancer.

Bartlett' case is just one of some 3,500 such "C-8"cases filed by residents of the area surrounding DuPont' Washington Works Plant in Parkersburg, West Virginia. The plaintiffs all claim that they suffered various heatlh related adverse outcomes and injuries as a result of the release of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), also known as C-8 or C8, a chemical used to make products like Gore-Tex and Teflon.

According to the lawsuits, C-8 is a toxic, cancer-causing agent that stays in the environment indefinitely; never breaking down. Studies have linked C-8 exposure to kidney disease, thyroid disease, ulcerative colitis, testicular cancer, pregnancy-induced hypertension, and increases in cholesterol.

According to the claims, DuPont knew for years that C8 from the plant posed serious health problems for area residents, including a risk of cancer, birth defects and other complications. The company also allegedly did little to prevent numerous spills and releases into the environment.
