Philip Morris to Pay $294 Million Verdict in Emphysema Case

This is a settlement for the Personal Injury lawsuit.

Broward County, FL: A 61-year old woman who claims that her 25 year smoking habit caused her to develop emphysema, has been awarded $294 million in a jury verdict of her lawsuit against the tobacco manufacturer Philip Morris.

Lucinda Naugle's lawsuit is just one of 8,000 such suits pending in Florida as a result of the Engle class action against the tobacco industry which resulted in a 12 figure punitive damages award against cigarette makers.

Philip Morris argued that Ms. Naugle had other medical circumstances that contributed to her emphysema, however the jury found them 90 percent liable, and Ms. Naugle 10 percent responsible.
