Potential Settlements In Malpractice Suits Against University of Illinois Medical Center Could Total $14 Million

Two separate medical malpractice suits are expected to be settled today, with the University of Illinois Board of Trustees possibly signing off on as much as $14 million in settlements.

The two lawsuits were brought to Cook County Circuit Court in 2004 and 2005. In the case filed in 2004, the University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago was accused of failure to recognize fetal distress and perform an emergency delivery, resulting in permanent neurological damage to the infant. The potential settlement for this case is $9 million, if approved.

In the 2005 case, the University medical workers allegedly failed to treat a premature infant with jaundice, resulting in brain damage to the infant. If approved, the settlement in this case would be $4.8 million.
