Gas Explosion

Door County, WI: (May-14-08) The family of Patrick and Margaret Higdon, a Bloomfield Hills, MI couple, brought a wrongful death lawsuit against Arby Construction, Wisconsin Public Service Corp., Portside Properties, their insurance companies, and Ferrellgas, after the couple burned to death in their vacation cabin. The lawsuit also named Cedar Grove Resort.

The family stated that the defendants were negligent, and therefore liable, for the propane explosions in Ellison Bay in 2006. Records of the incident show that the couple died early July 10, 2006, while vacationing in a cottage with their children and other family members. The resort was about 200 miles north of Milwaukee. Records verify that twelve other people were injured as a result of the explosion. The family claimed Arby Construction severed an underground propane gas line while performing work for the resort, which resulted in the explosion.

Sources stated that the three children were left watching their parents perish in the cabin, unable to get out. The lawsuit was filed by the children, as well as adult relatives including Margaret Higdon's parents and siblings, who were vacationing with the family at the time of the disaster. As part of a settlement reached in the case, four of the five defendants in the lawsuit agreed to resolve the wrongful death suit for over $21 million. The money will be divided among the three children, Megan, Patrick and James, and go into trust funds for them. [GREENBAY GAZETTE: $21 MILLION IN ELLISON BAY EXPLOSION CIVIL SUIT]
