Back Pay Due

Lafayette, LA: (May-13-08) Scores of Lafayette police officers, firefighters and city marshal's office employees, brought a lawsuit against the city, alleging that the Lafayette Consolidated Government began deducting up to $300 per month from their paychecks when a state supplemental pay raise was initiated. The nine-year-old back pay lawsuit reached a settlement this week, in which the Lafayette Consolidated Government agreed to pay $7.5 million to resolve allegations.

Officials stated that $2.2 million will be paid out over the next three months and the remainder paid out over the next six years. Court papers show that the suit has been in the court system since March 1999. As part of the deal, a special council meeting has also been called for, that will appropriate a portion of the funds necessary to begin paying out the settlement.
