Wrongful Termination

Detroit, MI: (May-02-08) Lora Manders, a former Napoleon High School counselor, brought a lawsuit against Napoleon Community Schools, alleging that she was wrongfully terminated. She stated that she filed suit to seek lost wages after she claimed she was fired unfairly. The 2006 suit stated that Manders was harassed and then asked to leave in retaliation for speaking to a female student who was having an affair with Co-Principal Scott Ashe.

Manders said that she faced retaliation for refusing to tell Ashe details of the conversations with the teen, and for reporting or objecting to sex discrimination directed against her. School records indicate that Manders was suspended indefinitely in December 2005, with the district stating that she violated policy when she did not immediately report the alleged affair between Ashe and the student. Ashe has denied the alleged affair, and school officials said their investigation cleared him of any wrongdoing.

As part of a settlement reached in the case, the Napoleon Community Schools agreed to pay Lora Manders $35,000, resolving the harassment and wrongful termination case. [M LIVE: MANDERS SETTLES HER SUIT OVER LOST WAGES]
